The Menzingers New braunfels Concert reviews
Morrissey Made My Sister Cry
I have been listening to The Smiths since I was born in 1994. My parents were fans of The Menzingers and of The Smiths, and therefore introduced him and his music to me since birth. I have memories of singing along to his songs from Bona Drag on my way to Disney as a child. So when my family heard that he would be in town, we bought box seats to the show.
The show really went south as soon as the opening act began to play. They were awful, and as I have been a classically trained musician for 9 years as well as a staff writer for a popular music blog, I do not say that lightly. They were a bad mix between Siouxsie and The Banshees and Elvira, and sounded pretty much like screeching garbage. This began the demise of the entire show, and it's just the tip of the iceberg.
After the opening act, there was a 10-minute intermission so that The Menzingers's band could set up. They put on a projection of some interesting music videos throughout musical history, and that was pretty enjoyable. I am not sure whether that is a part of the theater's repertoire, or if The Menzingers provided that. But it was basically the only nice part of the show.
The box seats were nice, except for the fact that seats in a row (100, 101, 102, 103, for example) were actually not together. So my sister and I had to sit behind my parents, who sat in the front of the box. The seat I sat in was very tall, and as a 5'4" person, I had to resort to climbing up the chair in order to get on. This proved to be not only difficult, but humiliating. However, this did not spoil the show, it was only an inconvenience of the theater (Ellie Caulkins Opera House in Denver, CO).
Soon after the intermission, The Menzingers finally graced us with his presence, and I was very cheerful at this point, and so was my family. He of course started out with a new song from his recently released album. It was a short song (as were all his new ones it seemed) but not bad. Many of the songs he played in the beginning of the show were about world issues such as world peace. As someone who is in favor of activism, I appreciated these songs, although I knew there were not songs I would likely buy or listen to for fun. They would certainly work as background music for a viral activism video about war or something. However, after all that and a few of his old (and well-loved) songs, he began to talk and sing about Peeta and veganism and animal rights.
I am very much a supporter of animal welfare and the fair treatment of all animals, farm animals and wild ones alike, but I do happen to eat meat. At first the "veganism is the best" thing did unsettle me, but I am aware of The Menzingers's views (recall the Smiths album, Meat is Murder) and I wasn't very offended. I have vegan friends, and I think it's a great lifestyle, just not one I could live. However, The Menzingers then began to sing a seemingly endless song about how eating meat is murdering animals and how those who eat meat are pretty much murderers, and he had a projection with violent images of farm productions abusing animals and killing them violently.
There was no Trigger Warning given, and so this just surprised myself and my family. I had to turn away for the whole song to avoid seeing graphic, violent images. My sister, who is 19, began to cry because of the violent and terrible nature of the images we saw. That kind of behavior at a concert on The Menzingers's part is abominable, and I was very vexed by that point. If someone is going to show violent, gory, BLOODY images to a crowd, there should be a warning given. No such warning was given, so I had to see pigs being gutted and chickens with deformed feet whilst trying to enjoy a concert.
In the end, I found that The Menzingers had become very preachy, and I didn't enjoy the show at all. I had to console my crying sister, and we left not long after that song. I'm sure if he had played that song and video earlier, the theater would have been empty for the rest of the show. The Menzingers assaulted my ears and eyes with violence. I am not against veganism, or the advocacy of animals in any way, but I am against tactics that use violence to try and change someone's perspective. And I'm really against bad music. The Menzingers has been ruined for me, and as long as he produces albums like the latest one, I will never purchase his music or attend his shows ever again. I almost wish he would apologize to my sister for making her cry.
